Wrigleyville Smart Opener

Jan 22, 2026 · Chicago, IL

The Goal

A Wrigleyville condo owner wanted a full smart-opener upgrade. The existing 1/2 HP chain-drive from 2011 was loud enough to wake the building on late returns from the ballpark. The goal: quiet wall-mount opener, myQ app control, battery backup for compliance with Illinois law, and a clean ceiling for storage. All in one visit.

What We Replaced

The original chain-drive opener had a 12-foot rail running the full length of the ceiling — removing it freed 12 feet of overhead clearance. The opener itself was 14 years old and had a worn drive sprocket that contributed to the noise. It was functional but at end of practical service life for a smart-system upgrade.

What We Did

Removed the old chain-drive rail and motor. Installed a LiftMaster 8500W wall-mount jackshaft opener — this model mounts directly on the torsion bar, leaving the ceiling completely clear and eliminating chain and belt noise entirely. Ran new wiring for the wall console and exterior keypad. Configured myQ pairing on the 2.4 GHz network (split from the 5 GHz band at the router during setup — myQ does not support 5 GHz). Tested the battery backup unit through a simulated outage: door completed 8 full cycles on battery before we called it.

Result

Dead-quiet operation, full app control, and Illinois battery backup compliance in one visit. Ceiling space freed up for storage. The neighbor in the next unit texted the owner that night asking who did the work.
