The Situation
A Logan Square two-flat has a shared rear garage with two parking spots. The LiftMaster 8355 opener had stopped responding to both the wall button and the wireless remote. No movement, no motor sound. The LED on the motor head was flashing 5 times in a repeating pattern — that specific code indicates a logic board fault, typically caused by a power surge or moisture intrusion over time.
What We Found
Confirmed the logic board fault with a manual wall-button test (no response even with the remote unplugged). Safety sensors were aligned and solid — not the issue. Motor winding tested fine. The logic board showed signs of a small surge event: one of the surface-mount transistors had a visible scorch mark at the base. The capacitor next to it also showed early bulging — not yet failed, but within weeks of doing so.

What We Did
Sourced a replacement logic board for the 8355 series (same-day from our distributor). Swapped the board, reprogrammed both remotes and the keypad, and tested the safety reversal system with the 2×4 block test per UL 325 standards. Replaced the capacitor while the unit was open — when a surge hits the board, surrounding components often absorb partial stress.
Result
Opener back in service for $210 in parts and labor, versus $450+ for a full opener replacement. Board carries a 12-month warranty. Owner added a surge protector on the outlet to prevent recurrence — a $15 part that extends the life of a $200+ logic board significantly.
